Why hire us?

In today’s disposable world, most people tend to purchase a new appliance when their old one breaks down. But sometimes, this isn’t a workable solution. What if it’s a large, expensive appliance, or something that can’t be easily replaced? To get back to work as quickly as possible, you will need an appliance repairer.

Your first instinct might be to call a general tradesman or handyman when repairs are needed, but this isn’t always the best option. A qualified appliance repairer should be your go to when your business or household appliances are in need of repairs. Here’s why. Continue reading

Dishwasher spare parts

The price to buy  a new cutlery basket for your dishwasher can be prohibitive. We have a large range of second hand baskets in our store at 108 Nudgee Rd Hamilton. Come and check to see if you can get one here at a greatly reduced price. (Bring your old one in to compare).

Dishwasher trays are also available for a range of models. Once again it is best to bring your old one in to compare to size.

Repair or Replace your dishwasher?

Its a difficult question, but like everything, the age of the appliance should be a good guide for you to make this important decision….. unless it is a top brand Kleenmaid or Speed Queen that is , because these machines were made to be repaired on and on.

The limiting factor with most machines will be availability of parts.  If we can’t source parts for you, no matter how much we would like to, we probably can’t fix your dishwasher. Local brands such as Dishlex, or Simpson, Westinghouse or Fisher & Paykel however, will support their models longer, while some overseas brands may never even supply them.

Sometimes, of course, the issue may not even require parts. We often see blocked pumps for example, which simply need clearing.

Give our friendly staff a call on 36301611 and we will help guide you in your decision to repair or replace your dishwasher.

Your dryer: Lint filter safety

1burnt-capacitor-and-lintDryer safety – Burnt out capacitor, fire risk

This alien looking electrical part is pictured here sitting on a massive bed of lint taken from a dryer filter. It is called a capacitor and in its current state, can no longer do the job it was designed to do. It was burnt out because the dryer could not remove the hot air from inside the drum of the dryer, but more importantly, the lint posed a serious fire risk.

It is vitally important to remember to clean your filter each time you use your dryer; the machine will last longer, but safety  is the most important thing here to remember, and this is one way you can easily remove a threat to  yourself and your family by observing this process.

If you need to have your dryer looked at, if it wont start or the drum wont turn; if the door wont open or the clothes just aren’t dry, call us at Albion Appliances on 07 36301611. Remember we can visit your home or you can bring your dryer to our workshop here at Hamilton on Brisbane’s northside, so once again your clothes will be drier.

The quiet appliance killers of your washing machine or dishwasher

One of the most avoidable problems your appliance may suffer is damage from vermin. We hear from pest control companies about how the cockroaches we see are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to numbers, and the places they like to live are in the damp or wet.

Unfortunately they can also do massive damage in those places, eating into the valuable and indispensable electronics of  washers, dishwashers and dryers in particular.

All modern appliances are run electronically these days and the electronic boards are delicate instruments. Once cockies have moved in they will damage the PCB of your dishwasher, washing machine, dryer or fridge, and may even get into your stove, oven or cooktop so that it can no longer function.

Make sure your kitchen and laundry are free from these pests, especially now as the weather warms up and they are increasing in numbers.

Give us a call on 07 36301611 if you need us to come out and inspect, or if you plan to bring your appliance into our workshop

Installation of your appliance

You have bought your new appliance; a dishwasher or cook top,  or maybe an oven. Make sure that the person delivering the appliance knows how to install your new machine or that you have someone lined up who knows how to install it.  This may seem an obvious part of the purchase process, but we often see dishwashers in particular which have been installed incorrectly, leading to a flooded floor on first wash.

When you buy an oven or cooktop, you should factor in the installation cost, as unless you have a licence to install electrical appliances, you must not install this yourself. It would pose a fire risk and voids insurances. Give us a call at Albion Appliance Service on 07 36301611 if you have any doubts or questions in relation to installation.

Time to replace your appliance? Buy from a reputable retailer

We occasionally hear from customers who have bought new appliances, particularly ovens and cooktops, from online auction sites, or privately. While the prices can’t be matched by the regular retailers, there are reasons why those online appliances are so cheap and they aren’t always good reasons.

Check the warranty on the appliance you buy. Even from reputable dealers, this can be an issue. Bear in mind that the savings on the goods need to cover at least one breakdown. So if something  goes on your oven or cooktop, you need to be saving more than $250 on the buy to cover even a relatively minor issue.

Is it a mainstream brand? It may seem attractive to buy an Italian or other overseas brand, but if it is not supported in Australia, parts and serviceability will be a constant problem. Even a new oven seal may be difficult to source.

Is it an Australian model? Occasionally we find overseas models of  even the more mainstream brands are being sold online, much more cheaply. But there are no parts available for these models as they are not supported in this country.

So before buying online, bear in mind that you want an appliance to last, especially if it is being installed  in a specific cabinet or bench space. This can also apply to dishwashers, washing machines, and dryers. Sometimes the attractive online models are not the ones to buy.

It’s getting warmer… Getting the optimum performance from your fridge.

Its time to consider how you are treating your refrigerator now the summer is approaching. Your fridge works by cooling the air inside the fridge using (usually) the cold air from your freezer. That in turn cools each of the items inside the fridge. Over working your fridge in the summer will put extra pressure on the compressor (your main motor in the fridge) and overworking the compressor can be caused by a number of factors. In most fridges, replacing the compressor will be too expensive, so its best if you can care for it well.

Firstly, the seals of your fridge and freezer need to be performing to their optimum capacity. Keeping them clean by wiping them down with warm soapy water occasionally, or when you notice them getting a little sticky, will extend their lives.

Make sure there are no obstructions to the door closing firmly. Its not worth the damage to your fridge to wedge just one more bottle of drink in at party time.

Lastly, be careful of how much is sitting in the door of the fridge. The hinges of your fridge are susceptible to damage if there is too much weight in the door, and if damaged, the seals will not work to capacity.

Once you have a problem, particularly if the fridge itself is not cooling, give us a call. Our experienced, and prompt technicians can help you out.
